A recent systematic literature review by Jonathan Álvarez Ariza & Carola Hernández Hernández (International Journal of Science and Mathematics Education) highlights groundbreaking interventions that improve access and success for students with disabilities (SWDs) in STEM and STEAM fields.

Despite policy efforts like IDEA and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), students with autism, learning disabilities (LDs), and ADHD remain underrepresented in STEM education, facing barriers in accommodations, learning tools, and socio-emotional support.

🔍 What Did the Study Find? The review analyzed 263 studies (2013–2024) and identified 39 evidence-based interventions that successfully support SWDs in STEM/STEAM education. Key takeaways:

✔️ Robotics & Coding for ASD & ADHD – Robotics programs like FIRST LEGO League enhance problem-solving, teamwork, and executive functioning in students with autism. ✔️ AI & Machine Learning for Adaptive Learning – AI-driven virtual reality (VR) tools assess cognitive-emotional states of autistic students, helping tailor personalized learning paths. ✔️ Accommodations & Self-Advocacy in Higher Ed – Adaptive instructional materials and assistive technologies improve participation and increase retention rates in STEM courses. ✔️ Science Identity & Role Models for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing Students – Encouraging a STEM identity through lab experiences and ASL adaptations increases engagement.

🤖 How Could AI and Python Enhance This? 💡 AI-Driven Personalized Learning – Adaptive AI can automate IEP strategies, predicting intervention effectiveness based on behavioral data.
💡 ChatGPT for STEM Tutoring – AI-powered tutoring assistants can guide problem-solving in mathematics and science for neurodivergent students.
💡 Python-Based Assistive Technologies – Speech-to-text, text simplification, and AI-powered gamification can bridge gaps in STEM comprehension.

🏫 SPED Classroom Applications 🔹 AI-Based Progress Tracking – Machine learning models can analyze students’ learning patterns and adjust materials in real-time.
🔹 Hands-On STEM Interventions – Integrating robotics, 3D printing, and AI-powered learning tools can personalize education for autistic students.
🔹 STEM Identity Development – Encouraging self-advocacy and mentorship programs can improve long-term retention in STEM fields.

💭 My Takeaway This review highlights the urgent need for AI-driven interventions in STEM education for SWDs. The combination of robotics, AI-powered learning tools, and assistive technologies could revolutionize special education, particularly for autistic students. Personalized, adaptive learning platforms could help bridge the participation gap and ensure neurodiverse students thrive in STEM careers.
